I’ve been eagerly awaiting the premiere of Bridgerton season three since the second season graced our screens in March 2022. The wait is finally over, as the first half of the new season is now streaming on Netflix. With the first four episodes available and the rest debuting on June 13, the much-anticipated exploration of Colin and Penelope’s relationship has begun. But does it live up to the hype?
What Is Bridgerton Season 3 About?
Set in London during the early 1800s, known as the Regency Period, Bridgerton is based on Julia Quinn’s book series. The show follows the Bridgerton siblings as they navigate the competitive and diverse marriage market in search of true love. The third season focuses on Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton) and his evolving relationship with Penelope Featherington (Nicola Coughlan).
Season three kicks off with the familiar ritual of the ladies preparing to debut in society, showcasing themselves before Queen Charlotte (Golda Rosheuvel) to be named the season’s “diamond.” Initially overlooked by both the Queen and Colin, Penelope’s journey from the shadows begins to take a promising turn.
My Bridgerton Season 3 Review
Bridgerton season three distinguishes itself by deviating from the immediate sparks seen in previous seasons. Unlike Daphne and Anthony’s clear romantic pursuits, Penelope and Colin start off as friends. Colin views Penelope as a confidante, oblivious to her deeper feelings for him. Penelope, on the other hand, struggles to conceal her affection, listening as Colin talks about other women.
As an avid viewer, it’s heartbreaking to watch Penelope grapple with her unrequited love, especially since she’s one of the show’s most underrated characters. Colin’s initial lack of attention towards her adds to the tension, but there’s anticipation for his eventual realization of her worth as the season progresses.
Surprisingly, the first episode places little emphasis on Penelope’s alter ego, Lady Whistledown. However, it’s expected that her secret identity will play a more significant role as her relationship with Colin develops, hopefully boosting her confidence after years of being a wallflower.
Is Bridgerton Returning for Season 4?
Yes, Bridgerton will return for seasons three and four. Netflix announced the renewal in April 2021, with a letter from Lady Whistledown herself. Bela Bajaria, Netflix’s VP of global TV, mentioned that Shonda Rhimes and her team have exciting plans for the future, indicating that Bridgerton will continue to captivate audiences for years to come.
Rating: 4.4 Out of 5 Stars
So far, Bridgerton season three is worth the wait. My hope is for more empowering moments for Penelope as the episodes unfold. Ideally, she won’t spend the entire season chasing after Colin, only for him to have a last-minute epiphany. It would be refreshing to see the roles reverse, giving Penelope the ultimate power to decide their future.
