The Paradox of Popularity: Why More Voices Don’t Mean Better Choices

Thought Experiment: Imagine the 49 other states all have better pizza than NY.  The best pizza in NY will be called “the best pizza” by more humans than pizza anywhere else.  Why?  Because there are more people saying it, not because the pizza is any good.  Hence, NY pizza develops a reputation for the best pizza when it’s actually the worst.

Now apply that to everything in life.  Steakhouses, snowstorms, technology, everything.  Every pro athlete who performs above average on a team in the Acela Corridor is called the next Babe Ruth or Joe Namath.
