The Big Lebowski

The Big Lebowski

A cult classic. 1998. Actors include Jeff Bridges, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, John Turturro, Julianne Moore, Sam Elliot, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. Even Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers has a small role as one of the villains. Written and directed by the Coen Brothers (Fargo).

This is a top shelf flick for multiple reasons. A few may include original, clever writing; hilarious scenes and dialogue (of course tastes in humor vary); excellent performances from a wide spectrum of actors; and a clear single vision/direction. This last point is tragically missing from most movies these days. Too many writers, too many directors, too many forces pulling the movie apart, too many hackneyed scripts, until we simply see a soulless money machine with great special effects. But that’s just me.

The Dude had a rug that really “tied the room together.” That’s what a clear vision does–and The Big Lebowski has it.
