Reputations in the sports betting world:

There are purported to be sharps, who are allegedly profitable professional bettors, and squares, who represent the unsophisticated betting public.  Squares, or “the public,” have a reputation for betting the favorites and the overs.

Simply betting on all favorites is called chalk or chalky.  Where did the term ‘chalk’ originate?  Grok tells us:The sports betting term “chalk” originated from the practice of writing odds on a chalkboard in the early days of sports betting. The term “chalk” refers to the favored team or player in a particular event. Since the favored team or player is expected to win, their odds would often be erased and updated more frequently, resulting in their name being covered in chalk dust.
